| Crowding in the nation’s emergency departments (EDs) can impede access to the timely care that is necessary during a medical emergency. In light of the coverage expansions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Affordable Care Act or ACA), an influx of newly insured individuals may strain an already struggling emergency system. Studies funded under the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Changes in Health Care Financing and Organization (HCFO) program are analyzing different
facets of the ED crowding problem and exploring possible solutions to improve access.
